Pennys Group Undertake Enabling Works at The University of the West of England

Pennys Group have recently been awarded the enabling works contract at the University of the West of England (UWE) which involves works from all areas of the company.

The site is located within the heart of the UWE Filton campus and is two hectares in size.

The Enabling Works Contract commenced in July 2021 and is to prepare the site for the construction of five new three storey residential blocks, similar to the newer buildings already on the campus, which aim to be environmentally friendly following an eco-friendly design standard known as Passivhaus, using very little energy for heating and cooling, and will represent a 75% carbon reduction compared to the traditional design and construction buildings formerly there.

The scope of Penny’s contracted works involves;
  • Undertaking all works alongside university life.
  • The demolition of the former outdated Carroll Court Halls of residence, previously the home to over 200 students on the UWE site
  • Diversion and termination of all main services, such as gas, electric and water, within the site boundary.
  • Major cut & fill earthworks, which involves moving of over 13,000 of materials to prepare for foundations and landscaping.
  • Forming piling mats for the five new buildings, including 4 test piles.

The enabling works project at UWE is due for completion in November 2021.
